If I could always be an inspiration
to you
albeit for adverse and hostile notions
I would, still
’cause you inspire me delightfully
by your words
harsh or otherwise
…But it would be a sad loss for its audience if authors do not go beyond the daily grind and ordinary experiences. In this aspect Malay literature is fortunate because often enough it is given wings to fly on the authors’ imagination and fantasy, on the genius of metaphors, into an intensely musical language. Literature often gives shapes and forms to the dreams and desires of a people, (whether conscious or otherwise). There are alternative worlds for them who are not able to stand the monotony or pain of their contemporary reality. – Prof Muhammad Haji Salleh, The Poetics of Malay Literature
